I am Alison. I built my first dollhouse when I was 12 years old, after my parents took me to see the Bradford dollhouse in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. I had no kit, or blueprints or plans. Just my imagination.
Three years later, the dollhouse finished, I had developed a new sense of my own capabilities…creativity, patience, and skill.

In addition I had a very deep sense of satisfaction that only comes from using one’s hands to build from scratch. I feel that, today, we are denying our children and grandchildren this wonderful sense of satisfaction that comes from using our hands and our creativity to create wonderful objects….satisfaction that cannot be gained from pressing buttons on the keyboard of a phone or computer. (Eventually, in this blog, we will go through this dollhouse room by room so I can show you some tips and ideas.)
As my life progressed, I found myself working in the field of Community Outreach and Communications for many nonprofits. These experiences led me to establish my own 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, Building Faith Play Therapy Toys, Inc., that provides free Play Therapy dollhouses to formerly abused children who are in recovery, working with a professional therapist. (You can learn more about this on the “ABOUT” page of this blog.)
We bring community groups and families together to work as teams, building dollhouse kits that we customize for specific children in the program. So I’ve become well-versed in helping others to learn the ins and outs of dollhouse construction, along with tips for furnishing them on a budget. People have been telling me for years that I need to write all that I know into a blog. So here I am! I hope you find tips you can use and that you will share your ideas with me as well. Happy Reading!
